Most of Ontario’s provincial parks are non-operating, meaning they have little to no facilities or services and people are not charged a fee to visit them. In a press release Thursday, the province said it hopes to turn Alfred Bog, south of the community of Alfred, into such a park and give it a “natural environment” classification, which: protects outstanding recreational landscapes and representative ecosystems, protects provincially significant elements of Ontario’s natural and cultural heritage; and provides high-quality entertainment and educational experiences....

A Hunt County jury deliberated for more than five hours before acquitting Shaun Lucas in the death of Jonathan Price. Lucas was an officer in Wolf City, where Price, who had played at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, was a city employee, personal trainer and bodybuilder with dreams of starting his own gym. Lucas was charged with Price’s murder on the night of October 3, 2020, and was fired by the police five days later....

According to multiple Green Party sources, party officials are discussing how to hold a leadership contest now that four committee members have resigned. The sources, who are not authorized to speak publicly, tell CBC News the party may hold fewer formal leadership events and is considering condensing two rounds of voting into one. The party was expected to announce the leadership finalists after the first round of voting on October 14 and then unveil its new leader on November 19....

HALIFAX – Forecasters say Hurricane Fiona is shaping up to be a “historic” storm when it hits Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec this weekend, packing winds that will likely exceed those of 2019’s Tropical Storm Dorian. Bob Robichaud, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, told a news conference that as of Thursday afternoon, modeling was predicting a “year-round” low pressure across the region that will bring thunderstorms and rainfall between 100 and 200 millimeters....

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Fiona had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph Wednesday afternoon and was centered about 650 miles southwest of Bermuda, moving north at 8 mph. It was likely to approach Bermuda late Thursday and then Atlantic Canada late Friday. The US State Department issued an advisory on Tuesday night urging US citizens to “reconsider travel” to Bermuda. The storm has been blamed for directly causing at least four deaths in its path across the Caribbean, where winds and torrential rains in Puerto Rico left the majority of people in the US territory without power or running water....

Days after Hurricane Ian ripped through Florida, wiping out neighborhoods and turning roads into rivers, rescue crews searching for survivors are reporting more deaths as recovery efforts continue. Officials confirmed that Ian killed at least 76 people in Florida after it made landfall last week as a Category 4 storm, decimating coastal towns, flooding homes, collapsing roofs, tossing boats into buildings and floating cars. Four other people died in storm-related incidents as Ian made landfall in North Carolina....

The flight, headed from Punta Cana to Newark via JetBlue late Monday, took off nearly five hours late, just after 7 p.m. It appeared on flight trackers as a lone craft in the middle of a swirling hurricane. It alarmed some weather and aviation watchers and prompted a question: Can you fly over a hurricane? “I’ve seen the JetBlue flight that apparently flew over Fiona and I will say that depending on the cloud top heights you CAN fly over a hurricane,” tweeted Nick Underwood, an aerospace engineer who flies into the heart of the storms....

FLORISSANT — After an independent report of radioactive contamination at Jana Elementary, the Hazelwood School District announced Tuesday night that the school will be closed and students will switch to virtual learning for the remainder of the current semester. By January, which coincides with the second semester of the current school year, students will be transferred to different schools in the district, officials said. “To the students, staff and parents of the Jana school community, we recognize that you are dealing with a situation that was not created by anyone in this room and that you have no control over,” said School Board President Betsy Rachel, reading from prepared observations....
