David Phelan A few hours before the release of the second generation Apple AirPods Pro, Apple has already revealed a software update for them. The new AirPods Pro are great — you can read an in-depth review of them here on Forbes — but Apple just released a software update that you should apply ASAP. This is the first time such an update has happened so early, literally hours before the handset goes on sale. MORE FROM FORBESApple AirPods Pro (2022) Review: Familiar Look, Great SoundBy David Phelan The problem is, it’s not as simple as an iPhone software update. To do the magic with AirPods, all you can do is leave your headphones connected to your iPhone or iPad. AirPods will be in their case and plugged in. Provided they are paired with the iPad or iPhone, they should update. But it’s a slightly mystical process, so it’s not clear whether it will take hours or days. At launch, the firmware version is 5A374, which is found by going to Settings and selecting the AirPods item you will find there. With second-generation AirPods Pro, you don’t need to go to Settings, then Bluetooth, and then find AirPods in questions. The new headphones and the latest software provide direct access to the headphones in a standalone entry in Settings, provided the AirPods Pro are connected. Leave them close and they should update to the desired version, 5A377, after a while. I know, how long is a piece of string, right? Apple isn’t saying what the update will bring, but bug fixes are the most likely. The timing is unusual, to say the least, and I’d like to point out that there were no apparent issues with the review sample I tested for Forbes, so it may be a rare issue.
