Waterloo Regional Police say they responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Weber Street and Kinzie Avenue around 6:45 a.m. on Thursday. When officers arrived, they found a 65-year-old Kitchener man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police would not confirm if the victim was shot at the Weber Inn, only saying it happened in the area. However, police tape could be seen blocking access to some hotel rooms and cruise ships were parked outside on Thursday. Katie Vaughn, who was staying at the Weber Inn, says she woke up when investigators knocked on her door. “[They said], ‘Did you hear anything?’ I said, “No,” he explained. Vaughn has been staying at the hotel since May and says there are a lot of kids nearby. “It’s just crazy,” he said. “They need to do something about all the people with guns and guns.” Police say there is no immediate risk to public safety and the suspect and victim are believed to have known each other. “The investigation is actively continuing by members of our major crime unit, general investigations unit and forensic identification unit,” said Const. Melissa Quarrie said Thursday morning. “There will continue to be an increased police presence in the area as detectives search the area.” Police have not said if they are looking for a suspect or suspects, but no arrests have been made at this time.
