A 12-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after his pet pit bull Diablo – Spanish for devil – mauled him in an attack that also killed his grandmother.
Ty and Mary Gehring, his 89-year-old grandmother, were attacked by the 12-year-old’s dog on September 14.
Diablo has lived with Ty since he was just five years old – ever since his parents split up seven years ago.
Ty’s dad, who does not want to be named, called the hound “sweet” as he struggled to understand the details of the attack.
“They grew up together, so I find it hard to believe that he was any kind of aggressor,” his father told Fox 31. “The years I’ve known this dog, he’s been a favorite of mine.”
Ty is now recovering from puncture wounds, lacerations and a broken pinky after being airlifted to hospital last week.
Goering succumbed to her injuries two days later on September 16.

Ty ran to get help from his next-door neighbor on the day of the attack. Police arrived at the home located at 15712 West 1st Ave in Golden minutes later
Upon arrival, officers found the 12-year-old and his grandmother with serious injuries
The boy’s father tried to piece together the attack and played mental when he heard that Ty was in the hospital.
“I got a call from my sister while I was getting on the plane that Ty had been attacked by a dog and that there was a serious injury and it was [air lifted] at Children’s Hospital,” his father said.
She later added: “When my son was able to talk, I asked him how his grandmother was and he completely broke down.”
On the day of the attack, Ty ran to get help from his next-door neighbor. Police arrived at the home located at 15712 West 1st Ave in Golden, Colorado to find the grandmother and boy with “serious injuries from an attack by two pit bulls,” police said.
Officers found blood from the house leading to the backyard, where the dogs were still fighting the grandmother.
They used stun guns, but were unable to get the dogs off her until backup arrived.
Ty, 12, is recovering after being attacked by two pit bulls on September 14. One of the pit bulls in the attack had been in the family for years and was called “sweetie” by the boy’s father
Both victims were immediately taken to the hospital.
Ty’s dad remains clueless about what went wrong, especially after he had his ex-wife do extensive research on whether Diablo was a “fighting breed” before they got the dog seven years ago.
His father called Ty and his grandmother “best friends” as they tried to understand the sequence of events that led to the attack.
“That was his best friend. Ty was just recently baptized by his grandmother and has a very active role in his life. He was a very good influence. His grandmother was one of the kindest people you would ever meet in real life.
