Drew Anger | Getty Images Former President Donald Trump called New York Attorney General Letitia James “racist” and “grossly incompetent” in an angry social media post Thursday, a day after she filed a sweeping fraud lawsuit against him and family members of. Trump’s post on the Twitter-like platform Truth Social called James “a terrific AG when it comes to protecting the people of the state of New York” and praised Republican campaign opponent Michael Henry as a “tough crime fighter.” He also shared a series of attacks on James from news sources and other social media accounts. In addition, Trump posted numerous messages apparently supporting the view that he should run for president again in the 2024 election cycle. One headline reads: “Trump must announce candidacy before midterms.” James announced a civil lawsuit Wednesday accusing Trump, three of his grown children and some of his longtime associates of filing fraudulent financial statements for years in order to obtain various financial benefits. The 220-page civil suit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court seeks at least $250 million in damages. She also said her office sent a criminal referral to the IRS and federal prosecutors in Manhattan to investigate possible federal crimes, including bank fraud and lying to financial institutions. A spokeswoman for James’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s posts. Trump’s flurry of online posts came as he faces several other legal challenges, including a criminal investigation by the Justice Department that led FBI agents to raid his Florida home last month. On Wednesday, a federal appeals court sided with the DOJ for Trump. It allowed federal agents to continue reviewing about 100 classified documents seized during the raid on the Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. Trump’s posts about James were hardly his first swipe at the New York official, who campaigned on a promise to investigate the then-president. In a post on Truth Social Wednesday afternoon, Trump denounced the new lawsuit as “another witch hunt by a racist Attorney General,” referring to James, who is Black. But his latest attacks on the AG came in a series of more than three dozen posts and reposts that alternated between promoting flattering articles about the former president and attacking some of his political enemies. He shared links from conservative news outlets with headlines like “Trump Is the Best Man Alive” and “History Calls Donald Trump.” He also shared negative messages about various personalities, including Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, CNN anchor Don Lemon and others. In one post, Trump took aim at his former vice president, Mike Pence, as he once again falsely claimed that widespread fraud led to his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. The message came in response to the House passing an election reform bill that Trump claimed proved Pence could have thrown out the states’ electoral votes for Biden instead of allowing Congress to confirm them. . Trump also shared several messages that apparently support the view that he should run for president again in the 2024 election cycle. Trump has suggested he is considering another run for the White House, but has not formally announced a campaign. But on Thursday, he reposted the blog’s conservative headlines, “Trump Runs,” “Washington Establishment Fears Trump Second Term” and “Donald Trump Should Be 2024 Republican Nominee.”
