The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. in the area of ​​Eglinton Avenue East and Midland Avenue.
According to investigators, officers arrived on scene to find a male victim in front of a building without vital signs.  He suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a trauma center, where he was later pronounced dead.
On Thursday, police identified the victim as Toronto resident Zaybion Lawrence.
No suspect information has been released in the daylight shooting, which led to a nearby school being briefly placed on lockdown and secured.
A city childcare center in a nearby building, which was closed at the time of the incident, was also damaged.
Photos from the scene show a large hole in the window.  The city says work is underway to repair the damage.
“The city is aware of a horrific incident that took place outside one of its child care centers on Wednesday,” officials said in a statement.
“Fortunately, the center was closed at the time of the incident and there were no children or staff involved.”
The homicide unit is investigating.
