Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada condemns Russian President Vladimir Putin’s escalation of the war in Ukraine, including his partial military mobilization and nuclear threats. Trudeau is in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, where Ukraine’s seven-month struggle against Russian aggression has dominated the talks. Earlier today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the global gathering via video, when he insisted his country would prevail in repelling Russia’s attack and forcing its troops out. That was just hours after Putin announced he would mobilize some reserves in Europe’s biggest military conflict since World War II. Zelensky says this decision suggests that Putin is not serious about negotiations to end the conflict. In Ottawa, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says Russia’s invasion could be at a “tipping point” and that now was the time to “redouble our support” for Ukraine.
