Stan Dean, who works for the Efland Fire Department, put up the wooden cross in honor of his granddaughter who was killed Friday night. Dean was one of the first responders to rush to the scene – only to find it was his missing granddaughter lying dead next to Devin Clark, 18. “It’s a tragic event that will stay with them forever,” said Charles Bullock, Dean’s longtime friend. Bullock said he is with a group of veterans and first responders called the Patriot Guard Riders, who will be outside of Wood’s funeral. “He wants us there so he can lean on them,” Bullock said. “They’re holding on as best they can, given the circumstances, any time you lose a child or a grandchild, one that young is tough.” The Orange County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that a 17-year-old boy has been charged in connection with Clark’s death. That teenager, charged with first-degree murder, is not yet in custody. As of Wednesday, Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall had not decided whether to charge the 17-year-old boy as an adult. Bullock said that Dean and the Woods are very much family people, which makes the murder even more difficult for them. “Stan’s a strong man, he’ll take it,” Dean said.
