When asked Sunday if the loss to the Packers hurt more because of the Bears’ history with their NFC North counterparts and how much fans wanted to smooth over the one-sided rivalry, Fields said: “Yeah. It hurts more in the locker room than the Bears. fans. At the end of the day, they don’t put in the work. I see the guys in the locker room every day. I see how much work they put in. Coming off a disappointing loss like that, it hurts.” A video of those comments that didn’t include the question posed to Fields circulated on Twitter and was brought to the quarterback’s attention when he began receiving alerts for posts in which he had been tagged. On Wednesday, Fields aimed to clarify what he meant in his postgame comments. “Yeah, I was mad after the game. I’d like to address it now to clear everything up,” Fields said. “There was something I said on Sunday after the game where I said the fans don’t put in the work. First of all, I was disappointed after the game. Number one, I didn’t want to talk to you guys. I wasn’t in the mood to come talk. with you, then, I should have done better to explain what I meant by that.

I’m glad we have fans. Never I’m not going to disrespect anyone for what they do or what they like to do. That’s how it happened. Some social media, they mentioned my quote and it made a big buzz. Well of course they did a great job doing that. Of course social media will. But I wanted just to clear it up.” Fields said he turned the backlash he received into a teachable moment. “I talked to my dad about it, and as long as I’m in this position, there’s going to be things like that that come up, so just knowing that as long as I’m in this profession, I’m never going to leave, so I just have to either be really be clear in everything I say, be really descriptive in what I mean or really just not say anything at all,” he said. Chicago’s offensive game and lack of a passing offense was a bigger topic of discussion than Fields’ comments from Green Bay. The quarterback had 48 pass rushes in Week 2 after throwing the ball just 11 times, which coach Matt Eberflus called a concern, but he’s not worried about forcing the pass to get a more balanced approach. “You want to see balance,” Eberfluss said. “I don’t think that’s really about strength. That’s what we have to have. We have to have balance in your offense, run/pass calls, and we’re going to get it.” Fields said Wednesday that the Bears have “full confidence” in offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s play and that his lack of effort was not a nuisance. “Like I said about Darnell [Mooney] on Sunday, if he caught zero passes and won the game, he wouldn’t have a problem,” Fields said. “If I threw zero passes and we won the game, I wouldn’t have a problem. Our goal as a team, as an offense, is to win games. Nobody looks at how many passes I had, how many yards I had. We’re all just trying to win the game.” Fields said he changed his entire routine after the loss, which includes waking up an hour earlier to give himself more time to prepare for Chicago’s Week 3 opponent, the Houston Texans. While the social media turmoil was an annoyance he felt he needed to clear up, the quarterback made light of a desire to share more of his personality as the front-runner on the Bears’ roster. “I think I’m just testing the waters a little bit,” Fields said. “I want to show you more personality. I don’t want to be a robot up here, so I have to be more descriptive with my words at the same time and really just describe what I’m trying to say. . “I could be up here saying ‘yeah, we’re going to do this and that’ and just be a robot. But I try to show my personality to the world, try to show my personality to you, show that I’m a real person and yes, I make mistakes. But yeah, I’m just finding a good balance.”
