New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing Donald Trump and the Trump Organization for engaging in “numerous frauds and misrepresentations” in the preparation of annual financial statements between 2011 and 2021. The lawsuit says the fraud was approved at the highest levels of the company, including Trump himself as well as Donald Trump Jr.’s children, Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump. The fraud and misrepresentation also greatly inflated Mr. Trump’s personal net worth by billions of dollars. The false and misleading statements were “repeatedly and persistently” used to induce banks to lend money on favorable terms, to satisfy loan agreements and to induce insurers to provide coverage for higher limits and lower premiums. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the independent arbitrator and special master tasked with reviewing all 11,000 documents the FBI seized from Mar-a-Lago last month cast doubt on Trump’s claims that he declassified the files. Judge Raymond Dearie cast doubt on Mr Trump’s reluctance to prove declassification and remarked: “My view is: you can’t have your cake and eat it too.”

DC Ethics Group Statement on NY AG’s Trump Lawsuit
Following the announcement of the filing of a fraud suit by New York Attorney General Letitia James against former President Donald Trump and his grown children and the Trump Organization itself, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington President and former federal corruption prosecutor Noah Bookbinder published the following statement: Donald Trump and his family have been running a corrupt business for years. Even before his presidency, Trump apparently did everything in his power to benefit the Trump Organization while keeping those he went to for loans and insurance in the dark about his company’s true financial position. If the federal government effectively being a subsidiary of the Trump Organization wasn’t bad enough, Trump appears to have committed repeated fraudulent acts, illegally inflating the value of his company for the benefit of the company and himself. We congratulate Attorney General James for filing this lawsuit. If the Justice Department determines that it is warranted under the facts and the law, it should also pursue criminal charges. Trump has shirked responsibility for far too long. It’s time to pay the piper. Oliver O’Connell21 September 2022 17:48 1663778096
