Photo: Castanet file photo The City of Kelowna is warning motorists of bike lane construction on Abbott Street this week. Construction begins Thursday on what the city calls the Abbott Street Active Transportation “rapid construction section,” between Christleton and Cedar avenues. “The ultimate construction segment between Rose and Christleton avenues will continue and crews will now begin the rapid construction phase of the Abbott ATC,” said Derek Corning, senior project manager. “The rapid build approach combines temporary materials within the existing road space and limited new construction to deliver projects faster and at lower cost. This will include 1,200 meters of cycle track added to the existing tarmac, along with concrete barriers and planter boxes that act as a natural barrier between vehicles and cyclists.” Pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles should be advised of alternating single lane traffic between Christleton and Cedar avenues. Delays, if any, are expected to be minimal. Abbott Street will be closed to vehicular through traffic from Rose to Christleton avenues during construction. “Currently, bike lanes are open on both sides of the road from Christleton to Cedar Avenues, however as we work on the ATC fast track construction, these bike lanes will be moved to the west side of the road and protected from the driving lanes from a new physical barrier,” Corning said.
Construction hours are typically scheduled Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Work may occur outside of normal construction hours, including evenings and weekends, to minimize impacts to residents and limit active construction time in the area.
The $2.4 million project is funded in part by the Canada Community Building Fund and is managed by the Association of Municipalities of BC.
