The City of Kelowna is reminding residents to protect Okanagan Lake by properly draining backyard pools. When draining pools, hot tubs or backyard water features any time of year, residents are reminded to:
To drain a dry area of their property for a long period of time, ensuring that water remains on the property For draining water with low flow To stop drainage if it starts to rain or the ground is saturated To test the pool water to make sure no chlorine remains. If your water still has any residual chlorine, it should be dechlorinated before draining So that it does not drain directly into Okanagan Lake To keep saltwater pools from draining into the rainwater collection system
Residents unsure of proper drainage are encouraged to contact the city’s water quality department at 250-469-8887 before draining their pool or hot tub.
Improper disposal of contaminated water can result in a fine of up to $2,000.
