The City of Mississauga previously issued a two-week suspension notice to Her Nightclub on Sept. 9, which would have allowed it to reopen later this week.
But in a statement issued Tuesday, management at the club near Eglinton Avenue East and Dixie Road said it was recently notified of a new “temporary” condition on its license that limits its hours of operation.
It said the requirement would prevent it from operating outside the hours of 10.30pm to 1am. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and would threaten the viability of the business.
“With over 50 employees, in addition to the significant overhead costs of operating a large venue in a professional and safe manner, this restriction puts the business at guaranteed financial loss. Therefore, we must suspend all operations as we appeal to this particular condition,” the statement said.
In August police took the rather unprecedented step of warning the public of “increased risks” associated with visiting Her Nightclub.
In the security alert, police said they have responded to more than a dozen calls to the facility since January 2021, including a Sept. 4 shooting that left a man critically injured.
The club’s management, however, said in a statement that they have been wrongly accused of incidents that took place outside their property in a public square.
“The plaza, which is home to more than 10 businesses, including several event spaces, has to our knowledge experienced five outdoor shootings in 2021 and 2022. The venue proactively attempted to connect with local law enforcement through various avenues and was twice denied the opportunity to pay duty officers to be a visible presence in the parking lots of the plaza, which is also her home,” the statement noted. “We will continue to try to reach out to law enforcement and municipal authorities in hopes of finding solutions to the ongoing and increasing acts of violence in the city, which is not isolated to the ENTICE ULTRA CLUB/HER complex.”
