Federer wanted to come back, his knee said no

After Federer underwent a third knee operation in August 2021, it was his intention to return to tennis sometime this season.
Federer’s goal in recent months has been to return to the Laver Cup and then play a few more tournaments in the remainder of 2022. Last Thursday, Federer broke the sad news when he said his knee had not progressed enough to make a return to the tennis.
“As many of you know, the last three years have brought me challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I have worked hard to get back to full match fitness. But I also know my body’s capabilities and limits and its message to I’ve been clear lately.

I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has been more generous to me than I could have ever dreamed of, and now I have to recognize when it is time to end my competitive career. The Laver Cup next week in London will be my last ATP event. “I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but not in Grand Slams or on tour,” Federer announced last Thursday.
