The incident happened at a store in the Heartland Town Center near Mavis and Britannia roads around 6pm.
The female victim was found without vital signs and was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, a male suspect was located at the scene with minor injuries.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain unclear.
In a news release Tuesday, police identified the suspect as Mississauga resident Charanjeet Singh. He was scheduled to appear in court in Brampton on Tuesday.
Police have not yet released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin. Nor have they commented on what relationship, if any, there was between the victim and the suspect.
THE STORE WILL REMAIN CLOSED FOR NOW
The stabbing, which took place in the center of the busy retailer’s garden in the early hours of the evening, left those in attendance shocked and horrified.
In a statement released Tuesday, a spokesperson for Canadian Tire said the company is “deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at our Hartland location last night.”
“The safety of our employees and customers is of the utmost importance to us and we are working closely with Peel Regional Police as they investigate the incident,” the company said. “Consultancy services have been put in place to support our store staff during this difficult time.”
The announcement states that the store will remain closed until the police investigation is completed.
The Department of Labor also had investigators at the scene Tuesday as the stabbing occurred at a workplace, though neither party has been identified as an employee so far.
Meanwhile, investigators are urging anyone with information about the incident, including videos leading up to or after the stabbing, to contact police.
