19 crews were sent to the Zeenat supermarket on Alum Rock Road, near Thorton Street, just after 6.30 this afternoon. Four fire engines remained at the scene early this morning after the fire had been contained significantly after it spread to flats above the supermarket. Drone footage shows the extent of the fire’s spread. At 6:43 p.m. on Monday September 19, firefighters were called to the scene in Alum Rock Road, Saltley. People are still being asked to avoid the area and local residents are keeping windows and doors closed. The following roads remain closed: St Agathas Road, Alum Rock Railway Bridge, Woodhall Road, Bankdale Road, Thornton Road, Washwood Heath Road, Chetwyn Road, Alum Rock Road and Beanie Lane. West Midlands Fire Service says it is working hard to reopen some of the roads. A spokesman for the Service said: “We have a number of fire engines attending. It is a large fire in a building on Alum Rock Road.” “We were called at 18.37. We are still dealing with it.”
