A 42-year-old man was killed around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, police said, when a truck crashed into a bus shelter and building in southeast Calgary. Monday, police said the driver, a 70-year-old man, was traveling northbound on 36th Street SE through the intersection at 17th Avenue in Forest Lawn when the Ram truck mounted the eastbound curb. The truck continued along the curb while “scraping against the wall of a nearby business” before striking the bus shelter and eventually a building, police said. When it hit the shelter, “the vehicle struck and killed a person inside,” Sgt. Colin Foster, who heads the collision reconstruction unit, told CBC News on Monday. Flowers were left at the scene of the crash on 36th Street SE in Calgary. (James Young/CBC) “What we’re really looking for is anyone who may have seen the vehicle prior to 17th Avenue to come forward and help us try to piece together what was going on with the driver prior to the actual crash,” Foster said.
Police do not know why the victim was in a bus shelter
The driver of the Ram was seriously injured and police said Monday that he was taken to Foothills Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition. Speed is considered a factor in the crash. Foster said on Sunday that the limit in the area is 50 km/h and the driver was going “way above that”. On Monday, police said a medical incident suffered by the driver is also being looked into as a possible factor. “It appeared the driver was in some form of distress,” Foster said. Meanwhile, he said police are also investigating why the victim was in the bus shelter. “We understand that he has a vehicle and he would use that vehicle to go to work or wherever he was going,” he said. “Well, I’m not sure why he was in the bus shelter. And that’s something we’re looking into as well – to try to piece together what his movements were.” Anyone who may have information about the incident or dashcam video is asked to contact the traffic bureau at 403-428-4000 or the police non-emergency line, 403-266-1234.
