The neighbors are fed up, the owners are fed up and now, a notoriously troubled house at 235 Nickel Road is being boarded up. Two days after neighborhood residents staged a peaceful protest outside the home, the owner decided to take matters into his own hands. Friends of the Surrey-based owner turned up at the house on Monday with stacks of plywood and boarded up all the windows. The move is the landlord’s latest attempt to evict those living in the home who have not paid any rent since May. “We’re just here to get these people out,” said Dan Walden, one of those who boarded the house. “It’s the end of the year for them. At that point, they’ll have some time to pack up and move, and if they don’t by then, we’ll come back and move the stuff out.” Walden says they are trying to negotiate a reasonable amount of time for those inside the home to pack up and leave. “I think we’ll give them a week or so.” Several neighborhood residents watched as the boards went up. Since November of last year, the home has generated more than three dozen police files, including overdoses, noise complaints, assaults, domestic disputes, thefts and suspicious activity. The owner tried three times to remove the people. He has a hearing date before the Residential Tenancy Board set for January 12, 2023.
