Thailand recoiled in horror on Thursday after at least 36 people were killed, at least 24 of them children, in a massacre at a childcare center in northeastern Thailand believed to be the country’s deadliest incident of its kind. Authorities immediately launched a manhunt for the suspected attacker, who was later identified by Thailand’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) as Panya Kamrab, a 34-year-old former police officer. According to the Royal Thai Police, he was suspended from police duty earlier this year in connection with drug possession charges....

The bill introduced by Cheney and Lofgren introduces new laws and strengthens existing ones to prevent individual government officials or members of Congress from undermining election results. “The Counting of Elections Act of 1887 should be amended to prevent further illegal attempts to subvert presidential elections and to ensure future peaceful transfers of presidential power,” the bill states. The House was not set to vote until Wednesday, but Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters that time for the legislation was up in the air because of “moving parts,” one of which was separate proposals on policing and public safety....

Neptune is the outermost planet in the solar system that has thin rings with faint dust lanes around it. These have been observed in infrared for the first time, allowing seven of Neptune’s 14 moons to be captured. The seven that can be seen from the recently released footage are Galatea, Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Proteus, Larissa and Triton. Triton is Neptune’s largest and most unusual moon, dominating James Webb’s portrait of Neptune as a point of radiating light, creating signature diffraction spikes seen in many Webb images....

Sources said the controversial move was being considered ahead of a mini-budget from the chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, on Friday, which outlined the government’s growth strategy and promised tax cuts. Reams of environmental and zoning regulations are expected to be scrapped to “drive growth and accelerate growth” in the first batch of around 12 investment zones. The zones are modeled after free ports and are intended to encourage more business investment by providing tax breaks to companies and cutting red tape....

19 crews were sent to the Zeenat supermarket on Alum Rock Road, near Thorton Street, just after 6.30 this afternoon. Four fire engines remained at the scene early this morning after the fire had been contained significantly after it spread to flats above the supermarket. Drone footage shows the extent of the fire’s spread. At 6:43 p.m. on Monday September 19, firefighters were called to the scene in Alum Rock Road, Saltley....

The volcano, known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, spewed millions of tons of water vapor high into the atmosphere, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science. Researchers estimate that the eruption increased the amount of water in the stratosphere – the second layer of the atmosphere, above the area where people live and breathe – by about 5%. Now, scientists are trying to figure out how all that water could affect the atmosphere and whether it could warm the Earth’s surface in the coming years....

But of all the critters they could have caught on camera on the morning of Sept. 17, a trio of cougars was the last sight they were expecting when they played the footage. The family says in 22 years of living in the Elbow Valley, they’ve never seen a cougar, let alone three. Many bobcats, bears, deer, skunks, moose and more have walked through their yard. Bobcats were the presumed culprit in this case as well, until the family got a little closer....

The ninth named tropical storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season has formed in the central Caribbean Sea and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before hitting Florida next week. If it does, it will be the first major hurricane to affect the state since 2018. Tropical Storm Ian was located about 270 miles south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, as of 2 p.m. on Saturday and was moving west at 16 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center....

A Capitol rioter has been sentenced to seven years in prison for providing the taser used in the attack on police officer Michael Fanone. Reading his victim’s statement at the sentencing, Fanone said Kyle Young deserved a cell with his co-conspirator, Donald Trump. The news comes as a Jan. 6 House select committee postponed Wednesday’s supposed final public hearing in light of Hurricane Ian hitting Florida. Footage was to be shown of a documentary featuring Trump ally Roger Stone predicting violence and abuse of power after the 2020 election....

Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian occupiers in Ukraine were in a state of panic as he announced that his troops had marched further east into territory recently vacated by Russia. “The occupiers are clearly in a panic,” Mr Zelenskiy said in his nightly speech last night, adding that Ukrainian forces would move with a strong focus on “speed” into the liberated areas. Ukraine’s troop advance could likely lead to a possible attack on Moscow’s forces deployed in the Donbass region, with Kyiv receiving more Western weapons, including tanks, from Washington....
